What Kind Of Paper Is Used In Making Disposable Paper Cups?

Cupstock paper is the paper used to make paper cups worldwide. Cupstock paper is food grade and has five layers made of chemically bleached pulp, surface sized with starch, and surface sized on the outside.

The paper’s weight ranges from 155GSM (grams per square meter) to 400GSM without a coating. It is coated on one or both sides, depending on the quality requirements, with polyethylene (PE) film, which adds around 13-15GSM to the base paper. PE film does not adequately resist alcohol, which is why it slowly erodes as the alcohol in a paper cup eats away at the film and leaks out. It is a good option for cups that don’t require a lot of alcohol.

Cups with a shiny/glossy/waxed finish usually have an extra PE film on the outside.

The size of Cup always determines the manufacturing for Cup – 65ml, 70ml, 90ml, 120ml, and so on.

Smaller cups(65, 70, and 75ml) are printed on base paper ranging from 155 to 165gsm. A polyethylene coating of 13gsm to 15gsm is then applied.

The base paper used for cups of larger sizes(90, 120, 180ml) is 190 to 260 GSM and has a coating of 15-17gsm.
